My 2017 Resolutions… How Did I Do?

A year ago, I wrote about how I don’t usually make resolutions at New Year. I’m more of the opinion that if you want to make a change, why wait until January 1st? I’m also pretty rubbish at sticking to them for long. However, 2017 was the year I turned 40 and I was in a reflective mood, so I decided to choose five things to focus on (let’s not call them ‘resolutions’). And now, as the end of the year is just about here, I thought it was as good a time as any to look back and see how I got on with my non-resolutions…

 

 

 

 

1. Lose weight: The year started well, and I was motivated to lose over half a stone in just a couple of weeks. However, the usual January illnesses struck and left me feeling low and craving crap. By the middle of the year, I was suitably disgusted with my lack of effort and joined Slimming World (after a false start) with renewed determination. And I did well! I was approaching a two stone loss but again lost motivation when I couldn’t find a group that suited me. Autumn arrived and so did my cravings for warm, stodgy food and chocolate. Failed again. Since then, I reckon I’ve put back on all I lost (and maybe even more). Sigh.

 

 

 

 

2. Exercise more: designed to help with number 1, I vowed to get off my lazy ass this year and find a way to exercise that suited me and my dodgy joints. I had a bike as an early birthday present and, while I have ridden it a few times, it’s been nothing like I had imagined in my New Year hopefulness. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a lazy, lethargic year as this year. My determination to make a success of my blog has meant many hours sitting on my ever-expanding bum, glued to my laptop. Not good.

 

 

 

 

3. Drink more water: this one should have been easy, right? Um… does tea count? I’ve drunk plenty of tea…

 

 

 

 

4. Stop stressing: I did this! Well, to a degree; I changed what I was stressing about anyway! With Small’s school saga resolved, I turned my attention to building my business instead. I guess it’s not stressful, as such, but it does keep me awake at night!

 

 

 

 

5. Do more of what makes me happy: Yes! I think I have achieved this one somewhat. I am absolutely loving my new career! I still don’t find it easy to describe myself as a ‘blogger’, but that’s what I am and I love it. I’ve made some amazing friends online and even met people in real life at events. I’ve been on a cruise ship, learned about vlogging at YouTube, made Big Macs at McDonald’s and went to the theatre in London, amongst other things. My kids and I have had some lovely products to review and I feel very blessed to call this ‘work’.

 

 

 

 

So, all in all, not a hugely successful year as far as my non-resolutions go! But not awful either. A bit… ‘meh’.

 

I don’t want another ‘meh’ year in 2018, so I really need to up my game. I have already made a start on tackling the weight loss by joining some awesome friends in an online group. The aim is that we’ll all motivate each other, encourage each other and be generally supportive.

 

My other goals also remain largely the same; the exercise and healthier living go hand-in-hand with the weight loss. And surely we all want to do more of what makes us happy? So I’ll keep that in there too. But, now that I consider my blog as my business, my work, I need to find a way to unwind from it, so I think I’ll try to work on my photography this year.

 

I’ve learned a lot more about goal-setting and achieving this year, so I’m intending to put it to good use and I will succeed in 2018! Here we go again…!
